It’s pretty easy to get leads. The problem is finding out how to turn leads into prospects! Many business owners fall back on the idea that if a person is interested, they will purchase. Do not fall into this trap! It does not matter what type of business you have, you will need to dedicate yourself to converting those leads over into prospects. Brick-and-mortar stores, web marketers or retailers, and phone based business can all benefit from these tips.

Know your customer. To successfully convert leads, you have to understand your current customer. Who are they and what are they buying? Pin this down, and you will then be able to identify your target market. Focusing your marketing on this type of customer will automatically improve the conversion ration of lead to prospects. Why? Because you will be channeling all your energies on your target buyer.

Ask a lot of questions. Do you really know what your customer wants? Are you sure? You need to be sure. More importantly, you need to know why a lead did not buy from you. There are many tools for this; phone calls, surveys, newsletter polls, and postcards for example. Once you find out what they need, be prepared to let them know exactly how your products or services can help them.

Offer plenty of options. For either financial reasons or a sense of caution, people may not take the plunge right away. By having a lot of different things to offer in various price ranges or levels (such as VIP, gold, basic) customers can test the waters without taking the plunge. Offer them the option of signing up for a newsletter or mailing. If you have a social networking fan page, let them know about it. Whatever you do, do not lose that lead! Keep them connected to your business.

Change your game plan. Keep your business fresh by trying something new. A new promotion or sale, a new product or service, maybe even a special event! The point is to have something exciting to present to potential prospects. If they are a real lead, there is some interest there. If they are not converting over to prospects, maybe your new item or event will be just the thing to get them to purchase.

Follow up with leads. People today are under constant demands for their money and attention. That’s why it often takes more than five hits on a lead before they become a customer. So do not give up! Act while your business is fresh in their mind. Keep sending newsletters and postcards (even if they do not open them, your business name is in front of them). You want to get their attention, and business, before someone else does.

Keep track of things. You will want to get into the habit of keeping copies of all marketing materials and sales reports. If possible, organize them according to date. Then you will be able to see what marketing strategies are working. It will give you a clearer picture of what turns your leads into paying customers.

Converting leads into prospects can be hard, but it’s worth it. After all, running a business is one of the most challenging things you can do! The time you spend initially will pay off in the long run as you start seeing those leads become customers!
